Review:
Although their albums were considerably more consistent than most dance-pop acts, Saint Etienne's high points were always their singles. Released prior to a quiet, lengthy hiatus, Too Young to Die collects all of their singles, from their debut disco cover of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" to their last, "He's on the Phone", providing a thoroughly entertaining chronicle of the group's career. Much of the music sounds somewhat dated ~ which is always a problem with dance music ~ but Saint Etienne was essentially a very good Euro-pop band, reveling in kitsch and style in equal measure. At their best ~ "Only Love Can Break Your Heart," "You're in a Bad Way", "Join Our Club", "Who Do You Think You Are", among others ~ they found the heart in nightclubbing. The quality of the music dips slightly in the latter half of the album, but there is prime pop throughout the disc. (AMG)

Customer Reviews Amazon:
An excellent compilation of the UK singles from this great, sadly underpublicized band. Terrific melodies, strong production, great beats and ballads. Can't be recommended highly enough!

♫ You're in a Bad Way ♫
"You're in a Bad Way" is a song by British pop group Saint Etienne. It appears on their 1992 album So Tough and was released as a single in 1993.
The song is a deliberately old-fashioned throwback to 1960s pop music. In an interview with Melody Maker magazine, Bob Stanley claims that it was written in ten minutes as a simple imitation of Herman's Hermits, and was only intended to be a B-side to "Everlasting", but the record company decided that it should be a single. "Everlasting" was dropped as a single and remained unreleased until it was eventually included on disc 2 on the deluxe edition of So Tough in 2009.
"You're in a Bad Way" was one of the group's biggest hits, reaching #12 on the UK Singles Chart. The single, produced by Alan Tarney, is different from the version on the UK edition of So Tough, with a "brighter" arrangement featuring chimes and an alternate vocal for the last chorus. The US edition of "So Tough" uses the single version of the track.
There are two videos for the song. One is a low-budget production featuring split-screen photography of the band performing in a blank space and wearing restrained 60s attire. The other is more spectacular: the band performs in a stylized, garishly-coloured version of a 1960s TV show, with a scantily-clad dancers and a backdrop of retro home furnishing.

Toast is burned, and your coffee's cold
And you leave all the post 'cause it's nothing but bills again
Home from work, put the TV on.
Get your kicks watching Bruce on the old Generation Game
Just dial my number, I've got some plans for you
You're in a bad way and I can help you through
You're in a bad way, every day seems just the same
( Every day )
Just dial my number or call my name
Jeans are old and your hair's all wrong
Don't you know that crew-cuts and trainers are out again?
Going out, you're feeling low
Running for cover, it looks like it's going to rain.
( What a shame )
Just dial my number, I've got some plans for you
You're in a bad way and I can help you through
