For a few years it's been common knowledge that Katka García is an exceptional singer of songs with Celtic roots, and certainly a lifetime spent traveling between Prague and Ireland has deepened the hues of her island inspiration. The enthusiasm surrounding her previous albums with Dún an Doras, has made her a phenomenon, and not only in the Czech Republic, but throughout Europe. In her latest pro-ject, she takes another giant stride forward in her endless musical journey.

Luboš Malina has been known as a remarkable instrumentalist, composer and arranger for quite a while. He has traveled around the world with the band Druhá tráva as a successful banjoist whose playing is considered top-notch, even in the USA, the cradle of bluegrass. His long list of recording and concert projects attests to his skills. Now he has teamed up with a female voice whose crystal-clear sim-plicity and extraordinary stylistic temperament have opened the way to make a longtime dream come true.

Two years of preparation later, García and Malina's project has given birth to the debut album Woven Ways, bringing García, Malina and co-producer Martin Ledvina, together with other brilliant musicians: guitarist Petr Košumberský (Dún an Doras), bassist Adam Stivín, drummer David Landštof, and other il-lustrious guests. Together they have recorded a CD that takes them on a trip from a familiar starting point to a fresh, unconventional destination. On the way, Larry Seyer (mastering), a multiple Grammy award winner contributed to the extraordinary sound.

Folk songs of the last century sung in English and Irish stand beside the works of contemporary songwri-ters (John Spillane, Andy Stewart, Dave Spillane, Dónal Lunny). "One Last Cold Kiss", a cover version of the 1971 song by the band Mountain, is especially captivating. The artists' intimate familiarity with tradi-tion is complemented by their uniquely individual approach to performance, arrangement and emotion, traversing the space between the Irish, Scottish and English hills and the American bluegrass plains.
It is vigorous, contemporary music, filled with respect and love for its roots, but also free to explore its present. The music stands on solid artistic and human foundations, and the album is the promising begin-ning of an intriguing combination of musicians, following paths that have now been woven together. How pleasant to walk with them awhile…

Životopis:

Matka Kateřiny je Jarmila Mucha Plocková, nemanželská dcera Jiřího Muchy a Vlasty Plockové a vnučka Alfonse Muchy. Otec se narodil v Praze Španělovi, který pocházel z Asturie, a Rusce a vystudoval zde gymnázium. Působil v různých bigbítových kapelách. Dnes žije v Barceloně.

Kateřina García se narodila v Praze. Když jí byly asi čtyři roky, rodina se přestěhovala do Barcelony, kde Kateřina vyrůstala. V 15 letech se s matkou vrátily do Prahy a Kateřina zde vystudovala gymnázium. Nyní učí španělštinu na Filozofické fakultě Univerzity Karlovy a na Trinity College v Dublinu, kde žije.
Mluví česky, španělsky, katalánsky, anglicky, francouzsky, trochu irsky a řecky.

Hudba:

Kateřina García se už od dětství zajímá o irskou hudbu. Od třetí do páté třídy chodila do hudební školy na zobcovou flétnu, jiné hudební vzdělání nemá. Po návratu do Prahy se seznámila s kapelou Púca Rua, občas s ní hostovala na koncertech (od roku 1997) a posléze založila spolu s hudebníkem této kapely, René Starhonem, vlastní kapelu Dún an Doras, která od té doby vydala tři alba, z původní sestavy v ní dodnes zůstala pouze García. V současné době však má skupina zdravotní pauzu.

García spolupracovala s kapelou Teagrass na natáčení živého alba Večírek. Zde se seznámila s Lubošem Malinou, se kterým pak dále spolupracovala na dalších projektech (Druhá tráva, Malinaband a Afterparty Band). Malina také nahrával banjo pro Dún an Doras. V roce 2005 vzniklo seskupení Kal y Kanto hrající balkánské, španělské a sefardské písně, kde mj. zpívá a hraje Kateřinina sestra Barbora. V létě 2006 založila Kateřina García s Lubošem Malinou skupinu Garcia. S touto kapelou v současnosti koncertuje. Jejich debutové album Woven Ways bylo nominováno na Anděla v kategorii World music.

Vedle české kapely Garcia se Kateřina García podílí i na několika hudebních projektech v Dublinu. S Jamesem Ryanem a Alanem Dohertym tvoří kapelu Gráda, zpívá i s Johnnym Tennantem, spoluhráčem z Dún an Doras, a někdy také vystupuje sama, a cappella.
